Noel Coward's BITTER SWEET
Sarah Morphs!... From London Deb to Eloper to
Viennese Chanteuse to Widow to Marchioness to
Dowager to True Love’s Patron
Sarah shares her 70-year memoir, bittersweet indeed, greeting The Call of Life. Bolting from her London engagement, she elopes to Vienna with her music teacher, Carl, honoring her sung promise in the hit-of-the-show, I’ll See You Again. She wins fame in Austrian cafê society as Sari, singing Carl’s tunes, including gypsy melodies like Zigeuner. Suddenly, brutish Captain Lutte kills Carl in a barroom brawl, adding to the “bitter” side. Sari returns to London to live out her years as a marchioness. Bitter Sweet claims some of Coward’s best music. You will thrill to Tokay, a rousing drinking song and you’ll chill to If Love Were All and its haunting tones.
